Saigon was not in the plan. It became the best professional decision I have made. Here is what the city taught me about speed, community, and what actually matters in a career.
I moved to Ho Chi Minh City with a six-month contract and no return ticket booked. That was eighteen months ago. I have not left.
The city operates at a pace that recalibrated my sense of what is possible. The startup ecosystem here is young, hungry, and genuinely global — engineers shipping products used across Southeast Asia, working hours that respect personal time, and a cost of living that removes the financial anxiety that quietly degrades so much technical work in more expensive cities.
What I did not expect was the community. The tech meetups here are some of the most substantive I have attended anywhere. People are building real things, talking about real problems, and remarkably willing to share what they know.
The food also helps. I do most of my best thinking over a bowl of bún bò Huế at 7am before the heat sets in. There is something about the rhythm of this city — noisy, warm, relentlessly alive — that makes sitting at a desk and solving hard problems feel like a reasonable way to spend a life.
